11-year-old kid hacked the American voting system for 10 minutes

At a conference in Las Vegas, the 11-year-old boy hacked the voting site.

He managed to hack the site for voting in elections in Florida and change the results of the "election" in less than 10 minutes.

Hackathon DEFCON is the world's largest hacker conference, held annually in Las Vegas. It shows hackers and cybersecurity experts trying to penetrate all sorts of computer security systems, highlighting how easily software and hardware can be manipulated.

This year, the DefCon conference organizers decided to add to the list of invited children who were offered to try to hack websites at the DocCon Voting Machine Hacking Village, part of Hackathon, which includes “13 simulation sites related to the presidential vote”.

It is shocking that one child succeeded.

11-year-old Emmett Brewer successfully hacked a replicated Florida voting site. Interestingly, he was not the only child who got into the electoral systems at the conference. In total, about 50 children aged 8 to 16 took part in the conference, and about 30 of them were able to hack simulation election sites.

The National Association of State Secretaries made a statement in response to DEFCON’s hacked voting systems, expressing concern about an event that encourages the hacking of official electoral systems, and saying that they do not accurately reflect the reality of e-voting in the United States.

“While we welcome the goals of the DEFCON participants to find and report vulnerabilities in electoral systems, it is important to note that our main problem with the DEFCON approach is that it uses a pseudo-environment that does not in any way replicate state election systems, networks or physical security. Providing conference participants with unrestricted access to voting machines, most of which are no longer used, does not copy the physical and cyber defense established by state and local authorities before and on election day. ”
