10 US Citizenship Requirements

Foreigners who are not US citizens from birth, undergo a process of naturalization and thus express a voluntary desire to become a citizen of the United States of America. If you are thinking about swearing allegiance to America, learn about 10 steps to naturalization.

Before you apply, you must meet several requirements. Depending on the situation, different requirements may otherwise apply to you.

General requirements for applicants:

1. At the time of submission N-400 Forms, Application for NaturalizationThe applicant must be 18 years old.
2. Be a permanent resident of the USA (have a green card) for the past 5 years.
3. Demonstrate permanent residency in the United States for at least the last 5 years just prior to the filing date of Form N-400.
4. Show that you were physically located in the USA for at least 30 months from 5 years just before the filing date of Form N-400.
5. Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or region of the USCIS where you are applying.
6. Show good moral qualities.
7. Show commitment to the principles and ideals of the US Constitution.
8. Be able to read, write and speak basic English.
9. Know the history of the United States and the basics of civil law.
10. Take the oath of allegiance to the United States.
