For the first time in the world: a wireless artificial heart made in Israel was transplanted to a Kazakh

Kazakh doctors told 6 February about the world's first successful implantation of a wireless artificial heart to a person. It was developed by an Israeli high-tech company to improve the quality of life of patients awaiting transplantation of a donor organ.

Along with Kazakh doctors, the Israeli heart surgeon from Sheba Hospital, Dr. Yigal Kasif, took part in the transplant operation, writes the publication “NEWS".

The artificial heart is a device that supports the work of the left ventricle, which supplies blood to all organs in the body. Usually in such patients the right ventricle works normally, therefore, if artificially restoring the work of the left ventricle, they can wait for a donor heart transplant.

It is estimated that 10 is implanted into thousands of patients annually with a conventional artificial heart. Implantation is performed by open-heart surgery. The device joins the patient's own heart, after which the chest is sutured. From the device through the hole in the abdominal wall is the cable to the control panel and 2 batteries, which the patient is constantly forced to carry with them in a special bag on the shoulder or on the belt.

“This bag causes a lot of problems. Because of this, patients cannot enter the water. In addition, the hole for the cable in the abdominal wall becomes a portal for infection,” explained Michael Silberschlag, CEO and founder of the Israeli company Leviticus Cardio.

Israeli developers managed to solve this problem by creating a wireless device.

The implantation of a new model of an artificial heart was first performed in December at the national research institute for cardiac surgery in the Kazakh capital Astana. The Israeli heart was implanted with 24-year-old Ismail Tursunov, who suffered from severe heart failure and was awaiting transplantation of a donor organ.

Tursunov, who was discharged from the hospital a few weeks ago, should not constantly carry a bag with batteries, and no cable comes out of his body. Recently, he successfully trained in the gym and swam in the pool.

“The new device has a built-in battery and antenna, to which electricity is transmitted externally. The time interval between recharges is 8 hours. When it’s time to refill the battery, the patient puts a special belt on his chest and charges the built-in battery, which does not require wires,” said Silberschlag.

A backup system is also provided in case of primary failure.

“We hope to trial the system on a large number of patients in a number of hospitals around the world within a year. And then the technology will become available to everyone who needs an artificial heart,” said the CEO of Leviticus Cardio.

One of the partners in the development of the device was Dr. Yigal Kasif, senior cardiac surgeon at Sheba Hospital. The company's engineers approached him 10 years ago.

Startup Leviticus Cardio has been developing a wireless model of an artificial heart during 7 in recent years. Dr. Kasif led the animal testing system and participated in an experimental operation in Kazakhstan. In his opinion, the new device will facilitate the lives of thousands of patients who can safely take a shower and not fear the penetration of infection through a puncture for the wire. And then people with an artificial heart will be able to lead the same life as those to whom a donor heart was transplanted.
