Ukrainian, who opened a kindergarten in the United States, is being tried for attempting to kill a child

43-year-old Natalia Kariya, owner of a kindergarten in Minneapolis, was sentenced on Monday to 10 years of probation for trying to kill an 16-month-old boy. The woman tried to hang the child in the basement on a loop, which she made with her own hands.

Kariya received a suspended sentence in the Hennepin District Court after she was found guilty of attempted murder and third-degree violence, writes The Daily Mail. Also, the woman was found guilty of driving at high speed in a minivan from the kindergarten, knocking down a pedestrian, a cyclist and hitting another driver.

Kariya was ordered to undergo a mental health monitoring prescribed by the court and electronic home monitoring for at least two months. She will live with an adult son, but will not be able to meet without supervision with daughters of two, seven and ten years old, as well as other minor children.

According to the criminal case, one of the parents brought his son to the house of Caria when she took him to the basement, where a man saw a young child hanging in a loop. He grabbed the baby and jumped out of the house, hurried to the hospital. 16-month-old boy survived. Kariya tried to escape from the crime scene by car and in the process, she hit three people. The police arrested her, finding a bridge on the overpass, from where the woman was about to jump off the highway.

Judge Jay Quam agreed with medical experts' assessment that the woman was at "low risk" of reoffending. He called her actions a coincidence of factors that are unlikely to ever be repeated. Attorney Brockton Hunter expressed gratitude on behalf of Kariya. He said Kariya, who has spent 20 months in prison since the incident, would leave prison no later than Tuesday. The woman promised to complete probation and told the court that she was glad that no one died.

Prosecutor Christina Warren insisted on imprisonment. Warren expressed doubt that Kariya could be properly controlled outside the prison and that the woman would receive the necessary care to regain her mental health. In a court statement, Warren wrote that instead of being a man, more than others seeking to protect a child from harm, Kariya left him hanging in a loop in the basement.

Protection advocated a suspended sentence, noting that the woman had already spent 20 months behind bars and lost forever the career of a caregiver, and also received a ban on communicating with children, including her own daughters.
