Snowfall in the east of the USA: 8 dead, hundreds of thousands without electricity

A powerful winter storm hit the US east coast on November 15-16, creating traffic chaos, killing at least eight people and leaving tens of thousands of homes without electricity.

The combination of rain, snow and ice created problems with transport, led to the closure of schools, cancellation of flights and huge traffic jams, writes CNN.

According to poweroutage.us, more than 400 000 customers in 17 states from Kentucky to Maine were left without electricity as of November 16 morning. Mostly the wires broke due to freezing on them of snow and rain.

Weather related deaths

Difficult weather conditions led to traffic accidents that killed people in several states.

An 60-year-old woman died in Miami County (Indiana) after losing control of her vehicle and had an accident.

One person died due to a traffic accident in Ohio, another in Maryland.

In Mississippi, a tourist bus had an accident due to difficult weather conditions, which led to the death of a 2 man and injured several people. The bus carrying the 46 man was traveling from Huntsville, Alabama, to Tunica, Mississippi. The injured passengers were taken to hospital with various injuries.

In Arkansas, three people died in two crashes on icy roads.

Road nightmare and flight delays

On Thursday, many motorists were stuck in a huge traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge, which connects Upper Manhattan and northern New Jersey.

Police of the state of New Jersey on the results of Thursday reported 555 accident.

In New York, strong traffic jams were also observed due to the snow; about 6 inches (152 mm) of snow fell in the city.

On Thursday, more than 8 000 flights were recorded in the United States, and 1900 flights were canceled, FlightAware.com reports. Newark airport suffered the most: there were canceled more than 470 flights, over 340 were delayed. Because of this, long lines formed at the airport.

On Friday, the weather began to improve and flight delays decreased. On November 16, 2 flights were delayed and 252 were cancelled.

Also in New York, there were interruptions in the movement of buses, because of which huge queues formed at the stops.

Pupils were forced to sleep in schools

In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, some parents and school buses were unable to reach students because of traffic jams and road closures caused by bad weather.

Therefore, the children had to spend the night in schools.
