US President Donald Trump ordered more than 300 burgers for a meeting with the Clemson Tigers football players, complaining that the White House does not have enough cooks due to the ongoing shutdown.

The president also ordered pizza and fried fries from fast-food restaurants.

“All because of the shutdown... We had to order fast food, and I personally paid for this order,” Donald Trump told reporters.

The current “shutdown” - the suspension of the work of US government agencies caused by a lack of funding - has become the longest in the history of the country.

US government agencies lost funding because Democrats who control the lower house of Congress refuse to allocate money to build a wall on the Mexican border. And Trump's supporters, respectively, refuse to sign the budget without this item of expenditure.

The 1995 record of the year, when the government closed on 21 day, was broken last Saturday.

While it continues, about 800 thousand employees of various departments remain without salary, more than half of them, including air traffic controllers, cannot stop working or temporarily earn money somewhere.

These people continue to work without a salary. Some employees, including some of the White House attendants, went on unpaid leave.

“We have pizza, 300 hamburgers, a lot of fries, basically all our favorite foods,” Trump said before dinner with the players at the White House.

When Trump was asked about his favorite fast food, Trump said he likes everything.

“If it's American, then I like it. It's all American food," Trump responded.

The president did not specify how much the order cost him; he only emphasized that he did not want to postpone the meeting with the players due to the prolonged shutdown.

On Monday, the Pentagon announced a decision to extend the stay of the military on the border with Mexico until the end of September 2019, although it was initially assumed that they would be there until the end of December 2018.

The decision to send troops to the border to combat illegal migrants was approved by retired Defense Secretary James Mattis in October 2018 on the initiative of Trump.

Currently, there are several thousand American troops on the border with Mexico.
