The dream of any state position, even if it is not very well paid, sometimes becomes an obsession for people who are looking for a stable income and do not want to go beyond the limits of specifically prescribed duties.

At the same time, immigrants who recently arrived in the United States with a basic or intermediate level of spoken English often believe that getting such a job is something out of fantasy.

I would not rush to agree with this. Also, under no circumstances should you despair! Don't think that your limit is any physical or routine work. It sank into oblivion along with the twentieth century. You live in the twenty-first century - the era of specialists and professionals!

In fact, getting a federal or city job is a completely achievable goal if you take a comprehensive approach to achieving it.

Ideally, you should have a clear plan for achieving a specific goal. I will now try to describe a short, five-step action plan, which I advise you to translate into reality.

first and most importantly, turn your attention to... yourself. Yes, yes... I was not mistaken. It's time to remember about yourself, your life path, your experiences, what you did and what brought you true pleasure. Or vice versa - maybe you did some work that is unpleasant to remember? It's okay, this is also useful information that will tell you what you need to avoid. Do you remember? Are you dreaming? Then move on to the next point.

Second, a short point, but very important. ACTION! YOUR ACTION. It is no coincidence that I wrote this in capital letters. Unfortunately, this is where most of our compatriots get stuck - on past memories and unfulfilled dreams. Over the years, grievances, regrets about a failed life, a failed career, the unrealization of your potential, and so on, increase. But we are not from this category! We strive to be successful, so we take a blank sheet of paper and divide it in half. On the left side we write down all the positive aspects and work experience, and on the right - everything that we will not do. Have you written? Did you read it carefully? Amazing! Now you have a rough idea of ​​what you can and want to do and what you won't. Agree, this is already a lot!

Third point — choose a direction. Depending on what qualities you indicated in the list, choose the direction and area where you want to work. Just put on your glasses of optimism, be patient, and Google will help you. Paid and free American newspapers, many websites, job centers and religious help centers - you are sure to find a clue somewhere. With all my deep respect, I strongly advise you to avoid Russian newspapers, since American employers, as a rule, do not advertise jobs there. Remember: New York has 60 government agencies that provide jobs to 325 New Yorkers. Is there really not a single job for you? Nobody got promoted? No one is retiring or on maternity leave? No one is moving anywhere? Here, here... Where are your glasses of optimism with my magic lenses?...

Fourth item - the most secret and... simple! All city and federal agencies will require you to have a certificate, license, certain education, and possibly work experience. Don’t be afraid of this; on the contrary, study their requirements deeply and in as much detail as possible. Don't rush to give up quickly if you lack something. Remember that the United States has its own system for recalculating education or experience gained in your home country in relation to American standards. This means that you have a chance, and maybe more than one!

The fifth and most important — set realistic goals and gradually achieve them. After reviewing the requirements for the job you're interested in, break down the work you need to do. Make a list for yourself and mark the completed items. This will help you coordinate your actions effectively.
